In a Grove is definitely a must-read short story. Her daughter, she says, has never been with a man other than Takehiro. Although the testimonies end with the robber’s confession, Akutagawa’s story continues with another confession and a story: Tajomaru lies on his confession because he wants to be remembered as a man who has fought for justice and beaten a samurai, Takehiko after he dies. The story is often praised as being among the greatest in Japanese literature. The witnesses’ inconsistencies might have not been on purpose.
However, it just seems like she wants to kill him, and trying to commit suicide after killing him is just an excuse.

There are people who might revel in confusion and find it a rich vein in which to examine the human psyche and its relation to truth.
Although both men say that she wanted her husband or the rapist to die, she has no recollection of demanding that the robber kill her husband. Thanks for telling us about the problem. As Tajomaru says in justifying killing, even the rich men kill, albeit by different means that is in a more socially acceptable way they are killing poor people.
