Books by Ivan Brunetti. Okay, that I could use. This book was mentioned in Lynda Barry’s Syllabus, and I wanted to read it to add to my background knowledge for my comics, cartoons, and graphic novels unit.

Developed as a text for a course the author delivered, it’s a little dry and feels like it relies on their coursework and feedback. He looks at the rhythms of storytelling, the challenges of character design, and the formal elements of comics while composing pages in his own iconic style and experimenting with a variety of tools, media, and approaches.

Perhaps this works with Brunetti’s tutelage, but this book is very far from giving anyone not already adept the wherewithal to think about problems of pictorial representation and storytelling. Brunetti is so precise with his wit, it’s cutting. I think they will put some of my students who think they “can’t draw” more at ease. Though I didn’t get what I was expecting something more along the lines of Scott McCloud’s books the book was really interesting and, well A reader interested in learning the craft of comics would do well to gollow its course.
