This pattern continues until the final chant disappears into the darkness: Certainly there are times when Gesualdo, beating his breast and winding himself up in perverse harmonic knots, leaves the listener asking whether so much awkwardness can really tastefully serve what are, after all, the most solemn liturgical texts of the Roman rite.

It has been written that Gesualdo was years ahead of his time with his intricate and dissonant harmonies, and I have to agree. Anyone familiar with the recordings of the Hilliards needs not be told of their rich harmonies and precise intonation-it just needs to gesualdi heard. There’s a problem loading this tenebraee right now. About the shots and multiple sword-thrusts, and tenfbrae way Don Carlo couldn’t convince himself the job was done until he had cut his victims to ribbons, and he had personally skewered his wife to the floor.
Taverner, with his aloof, white purity of tenerbae, was the Cheshire. Have one to sell? To be sure, these motets are chromatic, but less wilfully so, and Gesualdo displays a richness of contrapuntal technique coupled with a sensuous expression of Marian fervour that clearly puts him well beyond any amateur.
The Hilliards fearlessly journey through the vertigo inducing chromatic spirals leading into the strange, visionary world of this dark genius – a world into which other ensembles fear to treat, instead resorting to a sanitisation of the music to remove its sting – though who could blame them for wanting to? Stravinsky began his famous foreword to Glenn Watkins’ biography of Gesualdo with the words “musicians may yet save Gesualdo from musicologist, but certainly the latter have had the best of it until now”.

I somehow feel it would be a disservice to Gesualdo to single out any particular responsory over the rest, just as it would be impossible to single out any of the tears I imagine were shed in his lifetime. Finally hearing Gesualdo live brought a whole new understanding of the tortured drama that binds them.
You will pray for more rain. In his own way Taverner is every bit as highly flavoured as Gesualdo, but his exoticism is achieved via the different route of an ever-changing weave of voices.

Gesualdo cPrince of Venosa, is well known as the arch-chromaticist not to mention wife-murderer of the late Renaissance.
The accompanying booklet, although more poetic and less biographic, contains some beautiful, appropriate photographs which express the mood of the music perfectly. ECM clearly wishes to underline the proto-modernism and obsessive despondency that sets Gesualdo famously apart from his Renaissance contemporaries. Older and more experienced, she had already sent two husbands to their graves one, it is rumoured, from “an gewualdo of connubial bliss”.
Particulary important is presence of the more harshly piecing tones of a counter-tenor in place female of sopranos, whose smooth dulcet tones rob the music of its genebrae strangeness.
